A man has been arrested and charged for intoxicating a mentally challenged woman and forcing himself on her throughout the night.
The crime took place in Romney Park suburb of Bulawayo.
On a Sunday, Prince Muporoni (19) who hails from Kadoma town, met the mentally disturbed woman at the shopping center of the suburb late at night. Noticing her state of mind Muporori offered her accommodation for the night and she agreed.
The events which took place on the fateful day are as follows.
The 27 year old victim had been asked by her mother to water the lawn at her place of residence around 3pm earlier in the day, instead she ran away to the shops were she loitered until she met Muporori.
Muporoni is alleged to have forced his victim to consume alcohol until she was intoxicated. He then shared the same bed with her and raped her several times the whole night without using protection.
Press and Public Relations officer for Bulawayo Province Inspector Abednico Ncube narrated that the following morning, Monday 7 March, Muporori dumped the woman by the shops were she was found by a friend who took her home.
“The following day the complainant informed her mother about the rape and she escorted her to make a police report leading to the arrest of the accused person,” Inspector Ncube added.
“We are encouraging members of the public, especially women to be always wise when dealing with male counterparts so as not to fall into the hands of rapists in the name of comfort as this makes them more vulnerable to cases of rape, assault or even murder.”
The public is also strongly warned not to take advantage of people living with mental disabilities as they cannot defend themselves.
